Choosing your Ingredients
Craft It Yourself — Make It Yours
At Blackspur Co., we don’t believe oilskin should come finished, sealed, and lifeless out of a box.
We believe it should be built by the person who wears it.
When you treat your own garment, something changes. You begin to understand how it moves, how it feels, how it responds to the elements. It becomes yours — not just in ownership, but in character.
Oilskin was never meant to be disposable. A properly treated garment will outlast trends, outlast seasons — and often outlast the person who first wore it. With care, it becomes something that can be handed down, carrying the marks, stories, and miles of a life well lived.
This is not fast gear.
This is something you build, wear in, and keep.
A Heritage Built in the Field
Blackspur Co. was not born in a design studio — it was shaped over decades of use.
For more than 40 years, we’ve worn oilskins in the forests, across the outback, on the water, and around the campfire. We’ve owned and used garments from other makers — some exceptional, some flawed — all of them teaching us something.
Over time, a pattern emerged. No single garment did everything right. So we began refining our own.
Every ingredient you see here has been chosen through real-world use, not theory. Adjusted, tested, worn in, and improved again. What we offer now is not just a collection of materials — it’s the result of a lifetime spent in oilskin, chasing a better system.
Build Your Oilskin — Your Way
There is no single formula. There is only what you value most.
Each ingredient plays a role:
- Organic Raw Beeswax — the backbone. Provides structure, deep waterproofing, and that unmistakable heritage feel.
- Refined Paraffin Wax — drives penetration and creates strong water-beading performance.
- Refined Microcrystalline Wax — adds flexibility and prevents cracking in real-world use.
- Polymerised Linseed Oil — binds everything together, forming a durable internal structure that improves over time.
- Refined Tung Oil — increases hardness, durability, and resistance to moisture and mildew.
- Refined Gum Turpentine / d-Limonene — open the fibres, allowing everything to penetrate deeply and evenly.
Think of it as building a system:
-
For a rugged, heavy-duty finish
Lean into Beeswax + Tung Oil + Linseed Oil
→ More structure, more durability, maximum weather resistance -
For a flexible, wearable finish
Increase Microcrystalline Wax + balance with Linseed Oil
→ Softer feel, better movement, less stiffness in cold conditions -
For a balanced, all-round oilskin
Blend Beeswax + Paraffin + Microcrystalline + Linseed
→ Traditional feel with modern performance
There is no right answer — only the result you want to live with.
Wearing It In — The Patina
When first treated, your garment may feel slightly firm, or even a touch tacky.
This is normal.
Like a good pair of leather boots, oilskin needs to be worn in, not worn out.
Over time, the fabric begins to change. It softens. It flexes. It responds to your movement and your environment. This is where a patina forms.
A patina is the natural evolution of the material:
- Creases that follow how you move
- Subtle tonal shifts where the fabric is worked and worn
- A softening of structure without losing strength
- A finish that becomes uniquely yours
It is not damage. It is not wear.
It is character — earned, not manufactured.
You can accelerate this process by:
- Wearing the garment regularly
- Applying gentle heat to help the treatment settle
- Flexing and working the fabric by hand
But the best results come the old way — through use.
You Can’t Get It Wrong
There is a misconception that oilskin needs to be exact.
It doesn’t.
There is no perfect formula — only different outcomes.
More wax gives structure. More oil gives flexibility. More solvent changes penetration.
What you are doing is not following instructions.
You are crafting a finish.
Every variation simply produces a different feel, a different response, a different character. And all of them, when done with quality ingredients, will perform.
Don’t Worry
If you think you’ve messed it up — you haven’t.
Oilskin is one of the most forgiving materials you’ll ever work with.
Too heavy? Warm it and redistribute.
Too firm? Wear it in, or adjust your blend next time.
Too much in one spot? Heat, wipe, and move it through the fabric.
You can always:
- Reheat it
- Adjust it
- Reapply it
It’s not fragile. It’s not precise.
It’s meant to be worked.
Give it time, give it use, and it will come good.
